Summary Collection of manuscript, typescript, and printed research materials of Professor Henry Clyde Hubbart; historian, professor at Ohio Wesleyan University (1917-1952), and author of "The Older Middle West, 1840-1880" (1936), "Ohio Wesleyan's First Hundred Years" (1943), and "A Gateway to the Social Sciences" (1926). As assessed by Dr. Earl Warner, "Of greatest interest. . . are the notes, memoirs, essays and reports on interviews done in preparation for the writing of 'Ohio Wesleyan's First Hundred Years'." Includes letters and memoranda from faculty and alumni, poetry by Marie Drennan, most of the original drawings done by Mrs. Josephine Hughes Kun for the book, and lists of students who fought in several wars
Also includes 13 Civil War letters (April 10, 1863-June 15, 1864) of Marshall B. Clason (OWU '1859), Captain of the 121st Ohio Voluntary Infantry, killed at the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia on June 27, 1864. Also includes Professor Emeritus Dr. Earl Warner's notes when organizing the Hubbart Papers

Born at Carthage, Missouri, Dr. Henry Clyde Hubbart, was educated at the University of Chicago receiving an A.B. in 1905 and a Ph.D. in 1917. He received full professorship at Ohio Wesleyan University in 1920 and became chairman of the History Department in 1934
He collaborated in the authorship of a social science textbook called "Gateway to the Social Sciences" (1926) and wrote two books by himself; "The Older Middle West, 1840-1880" (1936) and "Ohio Wesleyan's First Hundred Years" (1943). He retired in 1952 and died September 18, 1960

NOTE Collected by Dr. Henry Clyde Hubbart in his home in Delaware, Ohio. Brought to Tennessee by Nancy Hubbart Baird after her father's death. Donated to Ohio Wesleyan University by Nancy Hubbart Baird in the mid 1980's. The Clason Papers came in a later shipment (1989). Organized by Professor Emeritus Dr. Earl Warner over a three year period with completion in 1989
